Loyola University Hiring for Popular and Commercial Music Program
The Popular and Commercial Music Degree Program at Loyola University New Orleans invites applications for a full-time faculty position to begin the fall 2022 semester. This appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer in the Popular and Commercial Music program within the School of Music and Theater Professions. This is a non-permanent position with the possibility of renewable appointments.
This faculty position will be responsible for teaching four (4) courses (or the equivalent of 12 credit hours) in the Popular and Commercial Music degree in the fall and spring semesters, in the areas of expertise. In addition, this position will serve as an academic advisor to a roster of Popular and Commercial Music students, as well as assist the Program Director with regular activities, logistics, and further development of the Popular Music degree program. and commercial. The ability to recognize and implement trends and developments in the modern/contemporary professional music landscape, instruct students in performance best practices, and make available to students new concepts at the intersections of music creation, technology and business are all essential parts of this position.
Mandatory qualifications and experience:
The successful candidate for this faculty position will possess the following:
• Minimum level of master’s degree and/or terminal degree in music/arts OR significant and professional experience related to music and superior reputation in the field(s) of teaching
• Previous experience with college-level teaching
• Previous experience as a performer, composer, music producer and/or arranger in a professional setting.
• A respected reputation as a musician/educator in the teaching field(s)
• Proficiency in computer software/hardware currently used in music production and post-production workflows including: Pro Tools, Logic, Ableton, Sibelius/Finale, Microsoft Office, Adobe Creative Suite, etc.
• Ability to teach a diverse range of lessons such as (but not limited to): lectures based on music theory, ensembles, private lessons, contemporary music history lessons, group piano, technology lab musical, etc
• Previous experience working in creative environments and interacting with entertainers and entertainment industry personnel
• Previous experience and familiarity with handling secure and highly confidential digital information and content
• Connections to related professional music communities, including manifestations of success within these communities
The ideal candidate will also demonstrate knowledge and experience of musical performance and/or production techniques and their attendant business models, international distribution markets, requirements of successful musical artistry, and trends in music. content distribution.
Other desirable qualifications:
• Ability to teach courses in other areas, such as the music industry, entrepreneurship, marketing, management, music supervision, and professionalism topics.
• Preference will be given to applicants who have achieved commercial and/or artistic success, and/or who have founded or managed music and entertainment businesses
This faculty position will be responsible for each of the following:
• Teach four (4) courses per semester in the program curriculum, which could include music theory, ensemble supervision, music production, style and practice, film music, arranging, and private lessons on the main instrument
• Participate in various events and activities, throughout the year, with regard to recruitment, auditions and admissions of incoming students.
• Oversee our weekly masterclass series
• Assist the program director in the management of ensembles, the programming of accompanists and others
• Advise students regarding the successful and timely completion of the study program
• Assist in the development of new curricula and curricula as required
About the program/school:
Specifically, the Popular and Commercial Music Studies program is designed to provide performers and songwriters of all musical genres with a 360-degree training program that teaches students about music creation through the lens of art. , entrepreneurial thinking and the music industry. Students develop technical and performance skills with instruction in songwriting, performance, recording techniques, theory, audio production, self-management/marketing, and more.
Our curriculum and pedagogy are firmly rooted in the Jesuit tradition of liberal arts education, with a particular emphasis on creative expression and experiential learning.
